Comparison of Gauges and Coordinate Measuring Machines

2024-06-03

The gauge is a tool specially produced by industrial production enterprises to control various mechanical sizes, which is suitable for mass-produced products such as auto parts to replace professional measuring tools such as calipers, plug gauges, and level scales. The following measures can be taken: key feature detection, feature line detection, function hole detection, large deformation area detection during assembly, prototype assembly, early function matching detection, etc. CMM is a kind of high precision measuring tool, almost all parts can be measured, including the accuracy of the gauge also needs the support of the CMM. Coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is a widely used measuring instrument, but it is generally not suitable for online measurement. Here are some differences between gauge and CMM machine.

1. Cost

The one-time investment of the gauge is less than that of the coordinate measuring machine, but in the long run, the cost of the coordinate measuring machine is lower than the cost of the gauge. Gauge measurement requires making a model of all the objects being measured, and the cost is very high. The combination of CMM and flexible fixture, although the initial investment is large, and there is a certain daily maintenance cost, but in the long run has a cost advantage.

2. Be flexible

A gauge is a device that makes special measurements of parts or assemblies, most of which are not flexible. Coordinate measuring machine with flexible fixture can measure almost all kinds of parts, the flexibility of the CMM is very good.

3. Easy to measure

The convenience of the gauge is very good, you only need to put the part into the gauge. CMM needs to be combined with flexible fixture to fix parts, establish coordinate system, program, etc., but in order to measure convenience, portable arm machine greatly meets the convenience of measurement.

4. Precision

The accuracy of the fixture is generally ± 0.15-0.2 mm. If a vernier caliper is used, the accuracy level can reach ± 0.1mm. The accuracy of CMM can generally reach the micron level. The KYUI series and SPOINT series coordinate measuring machines produced by our company have an accuracy of up to 0.7um, which can meet the high precision measurement of different sizes of workpieces.
